When assessing where some improvements are needed it would be easy to focus on “face value” issues (i.e. ability to re-collapse post comments) but there are more pressing issues.
- For example many users cite the abuse of The Stream on two occasions: either from power users or from posts shared by multiple people.
- Power user issues stem from the fact that they tend to utilize the service at high volume, thus they tend to dominate The Stream. The multiple shared posts issues stem from the fact that some “shared” information has a tendency to be re-shared multiple times, which can cause an overload of repetitive information in The Stream.
One of the ways they could approach these issues would be:
- Having posts by a power user grouped under an “umbrella”, which would look like a regular post from that person, the only difference being that under the users name there could be a chronologically ordered thread of the multiple posts they’ve made within a“decided” span of time.
- Posts that are re-shared multiple times could be grouped under an “umbrella” of the shared material, with an ordered list of the names of those who shared it. So when a user goes to their G+ Stream instead of seeing five separate posts of the same shared link to and article or video, they would see one post with the link at the top and the chronological list of sharers names underneath.
- When users re-share material but with added content value to the original shared post, one elegant way to address this could be to include it as if it were a comment (beside the name of the re-sharer) in the chronologically ordered list. The ordered names in the re-shared post could act as a link to the profile pages of the re-sharers.
